Percussion sisters duo Utari presents its 5th Tokyo recital, Utari Vol. 5. This program spotlights two chamber works for strings and percussion by Sam Adams and Haruka Fujii, representing the American contemporary music scene, featuring four guest string specialists based in Tokyo.
The concert will also commemorate the 90th anniversary of the birth of the late Maki Ishii, a composer deeply admired by the Fujii family, with performances of two of his representative works. The program will also feature music by Osamu Kawakami, one of the leading voices of the next generation of Japanese contemporary music.
Bringing together the newest music encountered in the United States by Haruka Fujii — Associate Artistic Director of the Silkroad Ensemble founded by Yo-Yo Ma — alongside the percussion works championed by Rika Fujii as she continues to make waves in Japan’s music scene, Utari vol.5 presents a condensed panorama of percussion music across eras and cultures on a single stage.
